Okay, I just need to blog about this. I finally tried Pandora – and hell, I love it!

I added three radio stations – a punk one based on music by Green Day and Nirvana, a soft one based on “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston, and a pop one based on “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira.

So far, I’m happy from 97% of the music that played. The only song I didn’t like I thumbbed down and was happy with the radio from now on.

Right now, there’s only one last thing that I want. And believe me, I’ll get it.

Exactly three hours ago, in my Gmail mailbox, in the SPAM folder (bolded by me)…

Dear Blue Frog Member,

As a follow-up to our previous emails, and, as promised, we are stepping up in the fight against Blue Security.

The Blue Frog member email database has been compromised, and is currently being distributed worldwide to spammers and to the public. Attached to this email, you will find a zip file of the Blue Frog database, which includes your own personal or business email address(es). If you have not uninstalled Blue Frog yet, we highly suggest you do so now in order to avoid your involvement in this war any further.

Leaving your email address on the Blue Frog list is a risky choice, as we will uphold our promise not only to increase your spam by 20 times the amount you are receiving now, but to continue to make this list publically available as well. Also, as the Blue Frog member database is updated, we will find more creative ways in which to use it, and frequently release it to whomever we wish.

Blue Security, Inc

I'm currently getting 100 SPAM messages a day. You want to send me 2000 of them, per day?
Like I care.

Come on, you've already got my email. You could give it away to the public anytime you want. Besides…

Personalized Results 1 – 10 of about 52 for "datrio@gmail.com".

Oh yeah, like I care.

And the best part? You are calling it a war, even though you ignored us (the Blue Frog community) in the very beggining.

Tell you what – you won this battle, but if you think you can win the war…

…I don't care.

On the 15th of January 2001, Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales founded Wikipedia, the free Internet encyclopedia. In February, the main page of Wikipedia was saying:

We started work in January 2001. We’ve got over 1,000 pages already. We want to make over 100,000. So, let’s get to work!

What can we say now, when we are on the list of the most popular websites in the world, with 20th place on Alexa and a Google PageRank of 9?

In this English version, started in 2001, we are currently working on 917,700 articles.

And that’s only the English version. The whole project has now more then 3 million pages/articles.

Ignoring what Larry, Jimbo, and anyone else is thinking at this moment about Wikipedia – it’s one of the biggest non-profit projects in the entire world. I really like what Jimbo said one day:

Imagine a world where every single person is given free access to the sum of human knowledge. We don’t have to imagine it. We’re doing it.

Today, with more than 170k articles, the Polish Wikipedia will soon become the fourth biggest Wikipedia in the world, right after the English, German and the French one. Our quality still isn’t the best, but we still have a lot of information, and we’re ready to improve our work.

And, lastly, to quote Jimbo Wales just once more:

I can’t speak for everyone, but I can speak for myself. I’m doing this for the child in Africa who is going to use free textbooks and reference works produced by our community and find a solution to the crushing poverty that surrounds him. But for this child, a website on the Internet is not enough; we need to find ways to get our work to people in a form they can actually use.

2005 is behind us and it was a pretty busy year for the Polish Wikimedia projects. The very beginning of the year was a great time in the press, as the Polish Wikipedia hit 50k articles. Many various community and computer magazines reported on this fact and encouraged to edit our project. Looks like it worked, because in less then 10 months we doubled our capacity – and at that moment we had information on 100k articles. Needless to say, we didn’t stop at that. We needed even less time (3 months) to hit 150k articles. Nearing end of the year we’re the fifth largest Wikipedia, and guess what – we ain’t stopping on that. This fast growth wouldn’t be possible without the help of bots, mainly tsca.bot, maintained by tsca, who’s adding new data to the wiki based on statistical data obtained from PD sources.

But Wikipedia isn’t about article count, only. Sadly, because of these bot articles, our average article size went down. In January it was (as Wikistats reports) exactly 2114 bytes, and what about now? 1947 bytes. Almost 200 less, and in the wiki world – that’s much. Lucky for us, we’re on a good way to change this situation – our user base has doubled, with more then 100 Wikipedians active in the community. That’s some change compared to the 40 active users we had at the beginning of the year.

As for the community, it changed. New faces arrived, which weren’t happy with the inner workings of the Polish Wikipedia. Some of them wanted to set new rules to the projects – the others were completely against, they wanted to abolish rules. We had beauracracy and anarchy – now, we can say beauracracy won, and is it good? Well, we’re getting more and more rules and policies, accompanied with votes on almost everything. Guess what? Soon we’ll even have rules on how to vote! But the bigger part of the community is okay with that, so we’ll stay at that.

2005 is also the rise of a new Polish Wikipedia project, Wikinews. Now, with over 18 languages and growing, Wikinews may become a major news source soon – but certainly (and sadly) not in Poland. Even though we’re the third biggest edition of Wikinews in the world, and we get some media attention, the project isn’t gaining enough articles. There were times when we had even 20 articles a day – now there are times when we have 0 articles (you got that right – zero) per day.

What’s the main reason behind that? The answer is simple – lack of a user base. According to Wikistats, we have 1-3 active users, whereas the English edition has at least 15 active users a month. Our article size is also twice as low as on the English edition, with about 1600 bytes per article.

Wikinews needs attention. Probably that’s why Wikimedia Polska, the Polish local chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation, has specific interested in this project. Citing our plans for 2006:

Activity towards the projects:

5. Help directed towards Wikinews users by giving our press passes and accreditations if the Wikimedia Foundation will allow us to

Besides this, we’re planning to give out email addresses or aliases in the Wikinews.pl domain to our reporters. Well, one thing can be said – we’re taking this professionally, but the question is – will anyone work for us for free?

But now, since we started the topic, let’s move on to Wikimedia Polska. Since we got registered at the end of 2005, we can’t really give a much report on that – but we can give some information on our plans for the next year. Our main concerns are:

Release of the Polish Wikipedia on DVD

Organization of the Wikimedia Poland Meet up 2006 in Wroclaw

Printing mini-books with Wikipedia and Wikibooks content distributed by volunteers in cities

Taking care of Wikimania 2007 organization in Poland and proposing the idea to the Wikimedia Foundation

Making good contact between the Wikimedia Foundation and the Polish wiki community

We’re already aware that we’ll have some strong competitors as to Wikimania 2007, so we’re planning to have a pretty strong bid. But I want to stop for a minute on the first point, release of the Polish Wikipedia on DVD.

We have some potential companies interested in releasing our encyclopedia, but it looks that someone went ahead – ENTER, a Polish computer magazine, release a special issue of their magazine, ENTER Special, subtitled “Knowledge in the Web”. You guessed it, Wikipedia is the main point of the magazine. A special DVD with the content of the Polish Wikipedia has been published, BUT… The GFDL license wasn’t mentioned anywhere, no attributions to authors was given, and the Wikimedia Foundation wasn’t contacted for permission to publish the content of Wikipedia under the name “Wikipedia”. But don’t worry – we’re on it, with constant contact with the staff od ENTER Special.

Besides this, Wikimedia Polska registered six (that’s right, six) domain names for the Polish projects – wikinews.pl, wikizrodla.pl (Wikisource), wikibooks.pl, wikislownik.pl (Wiktionary), wikicytaty.pl (Wikiquote) and wikipedijo.pl (for the Kashubian language version of Wikipedia). We’re in the process of obtaining wikimedia.pl (or at least, access to it) and wikipedia.pl. We don’t have any further plans for the domains, but we have a pretty big backup budget, so… Maybe Silesian?

As for the other projects, we can’t really say anything about them. With about 6 active users, Wiktionary stands pretty solid. 39k articles gives us the second place, along with the Italian Wikizionario. And we’re planning to make it even bigger with some open content dictionaries floating around the Internet.

Moving on, the Polish Wikiquote is a pretty promising project. We have only a few users, but most of them are really active and engaged in the development of Wikiquote. I could say the very same about Wikibooks. We even started a special section for printed materials. Want to print something? Go ahead, after all, it’s free!

Also, our Polish language edition of Wikisource looks very promising. I’ll be really encouraging various organizations to use Wikisource as a Free Library and to copy its content. I’m also eagerly waiting for translations of Public Domain texts which weren’t translated to Polish yet. Who knows, maybe in 2006?

What about other languages? Well, the Kashubian Wikipedia isn’t really in its prime time – with only 751 articles and only a few active users, this really isn’t the biggest encyclopedia out there – but I’ll tell you something. It’s the biggest encyclopedia in Kashubian. And as I mentioned earlier, it’s possible that a Silesian language encyclopedia will be soon created.

Okay, overall it was a really good year for the wiki projects in Poland – and it looks like 2006 will be even better. As Jimbo Wales said, “Imagine a world in which every single person is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge.” And guess what?

We’re doing that!
